World of Warcraft Trading Card Games - Drums of War

Fans of the World of Warcraft Trading Card Games (WoW TCG) will be raring to have a go at the latest expansion in town, Drum of War. The WoW TCG have taken the approach that Wizards of the Coast uses for the successful Magic: the Gathering card game - by taking the block approach, each expansion of the particular block has themes and concepts that are linked to one another.

Drums of War, WoW TCG’s seventh expansion is the first set of the third block. What is significant is that the first expansion of every block usually has the biggest impact among the three sets as it features the largest number of cards. Therefore, there is more room for the game designers to introduce new game concepts and themes - it goes without saying that Drums of War will have a pretty big impact on how the WoW TCG is being played.

Location, location and location

Drums of War will introduce a totally new card type in WoW TCG - Locations.
Based on the decklists made available online, there will be 12 Location cards alongside 18 new Quest cards.

First impressions gleaned from the online chatter on WoWTCG.com discussion boards and articles indicate that the Location cards function as decent Quest alternatives. This will be especially important for players who play Limited formats (sealed deck and draft, for example). An interesting the Locations are, however, you are only allowed to use one at a time. Any time you control more than one, you got to choose all but one, to turn face down. This is a pretty nice touch - kind of like your character travelling to a particular place, and then getting the benefits out it.

Secondly, we’ll also see new keywords based on racial abilities. Veteran WoW TCG players would have previous seen Berserking, Shadowmeld, Diplomacy and War Stomp, all of which were made available as individual Ability cards.

Now, each of them becomes a keyword, with selected allies being imbued with them. I personally find Shadowmeld and War Stomp to be the most interesting of the lot - Shadowmeld just brings a new level of annoyance, since anyone with it remains invulnerable until it attacks (or you somehow force it to attack).

Upper Deck Entertainment, the creators of the game, has also changed the way it deals with Talent Specs on the heroes. Previously, each class had different Talents for the Horde and Alliance Heroes. But now, in Drums of War, both heroes will share the same talent - this should help the game flow better in limited format. It’s a small change, but a welcome one nonetheless.

Give me my Bear!!

Every WoW TCG is never complete without Loot Cards, and the pick of the litter for Drums of War is the menacing-looking The Red Bearon. In the online WoW computer game, you will get a fourth exclusive mount through the TCG - needless to say this chase card’s already racking up impression moolah over at online auction websites.

As the rest of the cards, there’s plenty of drool-worthy material that everyone will want to pack four of into their decks. Here are some of them:

Bloody Ritual
This is a fine example of the new dual-class Ability cards that are found in Drums of War. Rogues and Warriors now have a quickfire way of drawing - four cards for four damage and four resources seems like a decent cost for this common.

Detect Traps
Another fine example of the sneaky Rogue’s ability to clean out opposing hands. At the right timing and with a little guesswork, it can be downright nasty.

Ferral Charge
This fine Druid card is apparently the first card that has the ability to interrupt the dreaded Illidan, and not to mention other cards that will do doubt appear in future sets.

Gladiator’s Regalia
Any card that gives Mages a decent boost in the armour department, strips cards like Illidan of their powers and the ability to deal damage at the same time, is going to really rock the tournament scene.

Natural Conduit
This Shaman powerhouse kills an ally and heals your Hero. Grennan and this should go together like two peas in a pod

Primal Totem
This has been touted as the card that will revive the flagging Shaman class. Will it? Or will it fade into obscurity like so many hopefuls before? Keep an eye out for this one - it just might return Shamans to the top of the tournament leagues once again.

Vengeful Gladiator’s Vestments
Yup, it’s got built-in interrupting ability, and is another one of those new, cool powersuits that Drums of War seem to have copious amounts of.

War of Attrition
The Warrior fans are talking about this already - get your Berserk decks ready to rock!

There’s definitely going to be plenty of new, funky card combinations and new deck archtypes in the coming weeks. In the meantime, may you dever go deaf from the Drums of War!
