Suddenly I Can’t Connect to Microsoft.com

Filed in Antivirus , General , Laptop & Notebook , Online , Windows Matter 26 comments

Can you imagine if your bos give you some easy task to do and must be complete in second, but you can’t complete it due to some stupid thing.

Haha, there was the thing that I am faced today. I’ve given an easy task i.e. to upgrade Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition from Service Pack 1 to Service Pack 2. Thats damn easy right?

Yes of course, just type on google some keyword such as “windows server 2003 sp2″, and of course the first and second result were from Microsoft website and we can download the Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 for x64 Editions easily. But how about if the page as shown below come in front of your face?

Microsoft Cannot Open

There are an error said that

“Oops! This link appears to be broken”

You know what, after I’ve see that error then I am rushed to:

$9.69 Domain name registration at namecheap.com

Hehe. :D who knows Microsoft forgot to renew their domain name, and I will be an instant millionaire guy. But, the domain status still “taken” and thats mean something wrong with my computer.

Hurm, yes there are some viruses hiding inside my small computer machine. But I don’t have much time to figure out who the h**l the viruses are and how to remove it.

On that time, my target was..

“I just want to go to www.microsoft.com and download the SP2 for the Windows Server 2008 64 bit, so to all viruses inside my machine please allow me about an hour to download the SP2″ :D

I’ve done some googling regarding that error and I’ve found the fastest way and “temporarily” can allow me to go to Microsoft.com website. The method was:

net-stop-dnscache

I’ve disable the dnscache. By type at command prompt:

net stop dnscache

*More info about disabling dnscache refer Here.

After that, I can access Microsoft.com website. And download the Service Pack 2. By the way, any other antivirus website that I can’t open before this can be open as usual. Then, I can update my antivirus and kick that viruses away.

Microsoft Website Antivirus Website

P/S: But after computer restarted, I can’t open back Microsoft.com website and any other Antivirus website. Then, I am in the middle of finding solution for this matter. Anyone know how to solve this issue?

Hi Barry, Im glad to hear that your server working. But remember Barry, equip all your Windows Server with any antivirus, make full update to antivirus and run full scan to your Windows Server. I’ve found that after run full virus scan, my Windows machine can access Microsoft website as usual without stopping dnscache first. Wish you full of luck..

Man, you are a great guy! After installing a clean, fresh copy of Windows 2003 Std R2, I was unable to connect to Microsoft’s websites (including Windows Update) while all of other websites were accessible. What the ?#!à#! is going on here ??

Stopped dnscache service and now I’m able to access them. Rest assured one has to understand WHY … !

Thanks Sire (since u r prince..LoL)..there are one of the reason why sometimes I hate working with Microsoft Windows products. Unix product is less hassle compared to Windows.
The newer Windows version, the more fussy and the more weird it be..duuuhhh.. :)

Actually, I found out that is a security bug in DNS cache. Anonymous users could pollute and spoof it from remote and that was the problem. Once updated my fresh installation to available security fixes, eveything started to work fine. ;-)

Just to let others know…

Turning Off DNS Caching under Microsoft Windows
If users experience frequent issues with DNS caching under Microsoft Windows, they can disable client-side DNS caching with either of these two commands:
net stop dnscache
sc servername stop dnscache
This will disable DNS caching until the next reboot. To make the change permanent, use the Service Controller tool or the Services tool to set the DNS Client service
startup type to Disabled. In order to permanently disable DNS Client, follow the steps below:
Go to Start • and click on Run.
• Type Services.msc in the Run command box.
• A window listing all the services will pop up. Search (http://www.tech-faq.com/search) for a service called DNS Client.
• Double click the listed DNS Client service and click Stop. Similarly, restart it by clicking Start.
