Install NIC Driver Marvell Yukon on Linux

Filed in Laptop & Notebook , Linux Tips , Online , Software 4 comments

Owh, weekend.. I’ve nothing to do today. So, I am playing with my laptop, shrinking existing hard disk to make dual boot Windows XP and RedHat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL 5) on my laptop. As usual, the very first thing to do is to get my RHEL 5 connected to the internet. By the way, my laptop use Marvell Yukon 88E8042 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller and I’ve successfully installed Marvell Yukon NIC driver on RHEL 5. Yeay.. :D

Here the step to install NIC driver Marvell Yukon 88E8042 on RHEL 5:

1. Download the driver file here.

2. Put the file on Desktop or anywhere you like. Then extract the file:

[root@localhost Desktop]# tar -xvf install_v10.70.2.3.tar.bz2
DriverInstall/
DriverInstall/README
DriverInstall/sk98lin.4
DriverInstall/sk98lin.tar.bz2
DriverInstall/install.sh
DriverInstall/functions

3. Change directory to DriverInstall and execute the installation file:

root@localhost Desktop]# cd DriverInstall
[root@localhost DriverInstall]# ls
functions  install.sh  README  sk98lin.4  sk98lin.tar.bz2
[root@localhost DriverInstall]# ./install.sh

4. Then the following statement will appear, then choose 1 (number 1):

Installation script for sk98lin driver.
Version 10.70.2.3 (Nov-03-2008)
(C)Copyright 2003-2008 Marvell(R).
====================================================
Add to your trouble-report the logfile install.log
which is located in the  DriverInstall directory.
====================================================

1) installation
2) generate patch
3) exit
Choose your favorite installation method:1

5. Then choose “Y” for the following statement:

Please read this carfully!

This script will automatically compile and load the sk98lin
driver on your host system. Before performing both compilation
and loading, it is necessary to shutdown any device using the
sk98lin kernel module and to unload the old sk98lin kernel
module. This script will do this automatically per default.

Please plug a card into your machine. Without a card we aren't
able to check the full driver functionality.

Do you want proceed? (y/N)

6. Then, follow the instruction until you will be asking for this action:

1) Do nothing
2) Deactivate diver
3) Remove driver

For me, i choose number 2.

7. Then, installation will begin and complete after the following statement come out:

.
.
.
Copying driver (done)                      [   OK   ]
Change /etc/modprobe.conf (done)           [   OK   ]
Rename alternative driver (done)           [   OK   ]
Make dependency (done)                     [   OK   ]
Delete temp directories (done)             [   OK   ]
All done. Driver installed and loaded.
To load the module manually, proceed as follows:
Enter "modprobe sk98lin"

Have fun...

8. Then, navigate to Network Configuration (command: system-config-network), we can see Marvell Yukon NIC driver already installed as shown below:

Network Configuration

9. On “Devices” tab, select New to create “New” to configure the Ethernet Device. I’ve choose to use DHCP in this case then click “OK” button. But manual IP configuration can be done here as well:

10. Click “Activate” and “OK”:

Network Configuration Activate

Save Configuration Network

Done!!!!  Happy surfing. :D
